The Salvation Army R.J. Montgomery Center
The Salvation Army R.J. Montgomery Center is an emergency shelter for men, women, and families. The Center provides the basic necessities to the homeless, those in need or in a crisis situation. Counseling and resource advocacy is also available for those who wish to get off the streets.
R.J. Montgomery Center also houses The Children’s Discovery Center, a special developmental program for families with children living at The Center. The goal of The R.J. Montgomery Center is to help lead residents out of the cycle of homelessness to self-sufficiency.
24/7 Shelter
The Salvation Army’s R.J. Montgomery R.J. Montgomery Center is Colorado Springs’ only 24/7 emergency shelter and can accommodate up to 210 people. Residents receive a warm place to sleep, meals and access to shower and laundry facilities where all necessary provisions are supplied. The Center also collaborates with The City of Colorado Springs, serving as first-call shelter in their cold weather emergency plan.
The Children’s Discovery Center @ R.J. Montgomery Center
The Children’s Discovery Center (CDC) is a place where residents of The R.J. Montgomery Center can be with their children for a positive, bonding family experience. The Center is set up to prevent interruption of a child’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. This also gives children the stability and security they need while their family is in crisis. All parents are required to participate in the upkeep of the facility. The CDC also offers a child care program so parents can attend job interviews or medical appointments.
The safety and welfare of children staying at R.J. Montgomery Center is extremely important to The Salvation Army. All children are under the care of either a parent or guardian, or in the Children’s Discovery Center at all times. It is also important to know that all staff at R.J. Montgomery Center are mandated reporters.
Helping People Help Themselves
Case Managers provide assistance in referring residents to public and private agencies for assistance, employment, medical care and mental health treatment, all in a constructive, supportive environment. Substance abuse services are also readily available.
Hope House
The Center also runs a program called Hope House. Hope House is a residence near R.J. Montgomery Center that provides housing for men transitioning out of the shelter. The two-year program acts as a solid stepping stone between homelessness and complete independence.
